Collaboration With Czech Republic

Global City International School had its first school collaboration with Gymnázium Litoměřická, Grammar School Prague on 11th June, 2018.

Students learnt that there is no “us and them” but there is so much that binds them together. Both the school children exchanged their interests and even taught some words in Hindi and Czech to one another. It was a thoroughly interactive session.

Finally, they bid adieu but with contented hearts in anticipation to their second ‘Key pal Project.’

Wishing them all the best of luck until the next Skype!

Lab Experiences At Gcis

GCIS believes that the laboratory is an important means of instruction in science. So our students frequently visit science labs to develop practical skills and improve team work abilities.

Five groups of objectives that may be achieved through the use of the laboratory in science classes:

  1. skills – manipulative, inquiry, investigative, organizational, communicative
  2. concepts – for example, hypothesis, theoretical model, taxonomic category
  3. cognitive abilities – critical thinking, problem solving, application, analysis, synthesis
  4. understanding the nature of science – scientific enterprise, scientists and how they work, existence of a multiplicity of scientific methods, interrelationships between science and technology and among the various disciplines of science
  5. attitudes – for example, curiosity, interest, risk taking, objectivity, precision, confidence, perseverance, satisfaction, responsibility, consensus, collaboration, and liking science

Self Protection Workshop

We conducted the first of a series of workshop on “Self Protection” in association with Safe Campus.

All the students of CI and CBSE from grade 6 to 11 were introduced to the concepts and nuances of personal safety and security in everyday life.

The program aims at creating mental, emotional and physical well being and safety of students by incorporating the students, educators and staff of the school in creating an all new arena of empowered learning.

The teachings are based on the concept that “mind is the strongest weapon that we have”. The concepts introduced were-

  1. Personal space- mind, body and heart.
  2. Harm- do not let anybody break down your self esteem through emotional, mental or physical harm.
  3. Situational Awareness- always stay aware and alert so that we can respond instead of reacting.
  4. Viral parts- those parts that cannot be strengthened by doing any excercise should be focused to create maximum impact in minimum time.
  5. Mutual Respect- do not violate the personal space of others and stand up to protect your own personal space.

Second Collaborative Project With A Turkish School

GCIS believes that intercultural learning helps in developing better global citizens on one hand and on the other these activities help students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate an increasingly connected and diverse global society to succeed in the 21st century.

Our friendship with Emel Mustafa UşaklıAnadoluLisesi, a Turkish School located in Aydın, Turkey is helping to build bridges between two wonderful countries. Second time, in the month of April, our students from grades 7 and 8 had few enriching sessions on the spring festivals of both the countries.

Apart from discussions the teams shared presentations and videos on “Mesir paste festival’ of Turkey and on ‘Holi’. The sessions not only helped our students to learn about themselves and their culture in a better way but also helped them realize that we are all tied together as citizens of the global community.

Cambridge Training On International Effective Education

GCIS was fortunate to once again host a wide range of workshops of Cambridge International Effective Pedagogy Series. The two-day workshop for educators from Cambridge institutions based in India took place on April 3rd and 4th. The trainers for the various courses were Lin Whyte (Effective Questioning and Metacognition), Eric Squires (Understanding Impact) and Fleur Mc Lennan (Inclusive Classroom- Differentiated Learning). The purpose of all the trainings was to focus on the common trends that enable teachers to develop strategies that achieve impact beyond the school.

The trainees were challenged on how to measure the impact of their work including the different methods used and how to make the best use of the information gathered. Also, a number of different pedagogical approaches have been presented as being helpful for teachers working with students in inclusive learning environments. Without effective pedagogy we have no operative method of education and, without purposeful and effective inclusive pedagogy, we have no basis for meaningful inclusion. Everyone explored inclusive pedagogical approaches that may be useful and that have been shown to be adaptable regardless of context.

Cambridge Global Perspectives Training

Cambridge Global Perspectives is a new cross-curricula subject. It focuses on developing critical thinking, research skills, communication and creativity. It will also allow children to study in-depth with a global awareness of environmental and social issues. In addition, it is a skill-based interdisciplinary subject of higher order.

Show And Tell Activity

Show and Tell is a chance for our tiny tots to show off their “prized possessions”. Being centre of attention for a couple of minutes will make them feel special and important. These emotions will make them feel more confident and valued. Who doesn’t like being the centre of attention? Even if it’s for a minute or two!

It’s also a great way to encourage your child’s interest in a particular topic and – as almost anything goes – it’s a chance for children to think ‘outside the box’ a little and invite their teacher and classmates to come into their own little world for a minute or two.

The Pre-KG children were so excited to bring their favourite toy to school, as soon they entered the classroom they took out their toy and placed it on a table while they waited for their turn to share with the group. Each child was called to the front and were encouraged to show their toy to the rest of the class. All were eager to talk about their toys. Girls were happy to display their dolls, soft toys while boys were thrilled to talk about their cars, toy truck, and airplane. Some of them got domestic animals, whistle and superheroes, those who did not bring were provided by their favourite stuff available in the classroom. Most of them spoke with confidence, their eyes were gleaming when they were showcasing their favourite toys to others while some were encouraged by asking simple questions about their toy which made them speak and describe more about their toy.

The topic for KG 1 children was ‘Fruits and vegetables’ and they exceeded our expectations.

The theme for KG 2 was “My favourite animal”. Children brought various props/objects/flashcards of their favourite animal and took over the class in turns, experiencing interesting facts and information of different animals and expressing it their way. They were good teachers as well as audiences, patiently performing, listening and enjoying the presentations. Not only was this activity conducted to talk about their favourite animal, but mainly to develop and shape their oral, listening and social skills. It concluded happily with the children discussing and discovering each other’s fantasies about their favourite animals. It was truly a treat to our eyes.

This activity helped children in building confidence, learning great communication skills that will serve as a solid foundation for future learning.

Kannada Rajyotsava Celebration

Kannada Rajyotsava is celebrated on 1st November of every year. This was the day in 1956 when all the Kannada language-speaking regions of South India were merged to form the state of Karnataka. We at GCIS, had a special assembly by our kindergarteners to mark the importance of Kannada Rajyotsava, where in two of our little munchkins was dressed as Dr. Sudhamurthy and Dr. Rajkumar, and spoke about them. This was continued by our munchkins singing the state anthem “Jai Bharatha Jananiya Thanu Jaathe”. The cutie pies of our kindergarten also entertained the audience by exhibiting their folk dance skills on the “Chennepa chenne gowda”. The Facilitators also explained to the kids about the significance of Kannada Rajyotsava.
